The new revised Junior Cert Science syllabus was examined for the first time in June 2006. With its new activity-based and practical focus, the importance of the processes of science, as well as subject knowledge and understanding, is reflected in the syllabus structure. Through a variety of experiments and investigations, students will conquer defined learning outcomes and develop an understanding of the impact that science has in their lives and in the real world.
To help students and teachers embrace the strong practical and experimental goals of the new syllabus, skoool.ie has developed a range of new content that will prompt input, thought and interaction on the part of the student.
In association with the Junior Science Support Service (JSSS) of the Department of Education and Science, skoool.ie is pleased to launch a brand new, highly interactive investigation-based Physics tool. The Intel® Junior Physics Investigation tool has been designed to help teachers and students practice an investigative approach to problem solving which is central to the revised Junior Certificate Science syllabus.

Short simulations are also available to reinforce a student’s understanding of scientific concepts and will link the theory to everyday situations in an engaging manner. The student can extract and apply meaning to abstract concepts, in concrete, fail-safe environments. A range of simulations helps the student develop a variety of skill sets, for example, students can learn the anatomy of the heart by assembling a simulated heart from its component parts. The simulations cover the three main components of the syllabus, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Also new to skoool.ie’s Junior Cert Science channel are the Test Yourself! interactive quizzes. Students can test themselves and check their understanding of concepts in a safe, self-guided environment. The interactive quizzes will not only inform the student of how well they did, but directed links are also provided to some of the other great learning resources on skoool.ie that will help the student enhance his/her knowledge of Science.
In addition to the new simulations and quizzes, there are at least twenty high-media, interactive Science lessons for the student to use in support of his/her learning.
